Snapdragon X2 is the next step in Qualcomm’s Windows on Arm strategy, but the important change is not only the model number. X2 brings more CPU cores in the upper tier, a newer Oryon design, and a stronger NPU position, while keeping the platform focused on battery life, quiet laptops, and connected PCs.
X2 Elite Has a Higher Performance Ceiling
The top Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E-96-100 has 18 CPU cores, up to 5.0 GHz boost, 53 MB of cache, and an 80 TOPS NPU according to Qualcomm’s product brief. That is a different class of part from the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite X1E-84-100, especially for sustained multitasking and compiling.
Not every X2 Elite model is identical. The X2E-90-100 and X2E-84-100 use different core counts, frequencies, graphics configurations, and memory bandwidths. Read the exact part number before assuming that every X2 laptop has the same performance profile.
X2 Plus Targets Efficient Mainstream Laptops
The Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P-64-100 uses 10 Oryon cores, 34 MB of cache, and an 80 TOPS NPU. The six-core X2P-42-100 is a lower tier for thinner or more affordable systems. These parts make more sense for travel laptops, office work, web applications, and users who value long unplugged use over maximum multicore throughput.

Is X2 Worth Choosing Over X1?
Choose X2 for a new purchase when the laptop is available at a sensible price and your applications run well on Arm. Choose X1 when a discount is significant or the exact laptop has better cooling, display, storage, and software support.
